BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG completes 50 days

Rabu, 04 September 2013

In the times when the best of films run in theatres for three or at the maximum four weeks, BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG has been running for over seven weeks now. With the film completing 50 days at the box office, it is time for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra to get into a retrospective mode.

He has all the right reasons too. After all, before the Farhan Akhtar enacted affair, his DELHI 6 hadn't really seen such flattering response, either critically or commercially. For someone who was the darling of the industry after RANG DE BASANTI, he had a threat of oblivion looming large when the Abhishek Bachchan starrer failed to make much waves.

"Woh hota hai," Mehra says in a soft tone, "When you attempt subjects like DELHI 6 then you are always looking for something. If you are lucky then you find it; if you don't then you try it again. I had attempted a metaphor of 'kaala bandar' within us and also used a mirror as a tool for self reflection. Some were impressed, some were not. That's okay. It is a little more complex when you attempt subjects like RANG DE BASANTI, DELHI 6 or BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG. I have always set out on a different road. I have done that since my debut film AKS. For me cinema is very personal, it is a self-expression."

Now that his film has entered the century club, he has good reason to play on the front foot as well. "Agar logon ko picture lambhi lagti toh woh baar baar nahi aate. The very fact they have enjoyed that what they saw justifies the film's length," he continues, "It is the eventual content that counts."

True that!

Sabtu, 31 Agustus 2013
Prakash Jha's political thriller starring Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpai, Amrita Rao has collected approx Rs. 11 cr on its first day. The collections are showing upward trend thanks to the positive word of mouth, according to trade website
Koimoi.com. "The film had an above average occupancy on its opening day at the Domestic Box Office. The film’s screen count was approx 2400-2500 and made a business of around 11 crores on 1st Friday i.e. Day 1 at the India Box Office," reported the trade website.
The film's opening day collection is apparently the highest for a Prakash Jha film. "Satyagraha grew steadfastly and robustly in evening/night shows. Collects Rs. 11.21 cr on Friday. Prakash Jha's biggest opener thus far," wrote Trade analyst Taran Adarsh on Twitter.
The movie picked up towards the evening.
"Satyagraha’s box office performance remained stable in the morning and afternoon shows. However, it showed massive pickup in the evening and night shows resulting a good Day 1 collections.  The movie will surely pick up today and tomorrow, as the word of mouth publicity is strong and growing stronger!" Said Koimoi.

Once upon a time in Mumbai dobarra (OUATIMD ) box office collection: 11 crore on it's opening day

Sabtu, 17 Agustus 2013
                                                 pic source: indicine

Mumbai, Aug 17 (TruthDive): Despite the limited number of screens, Ekta Kapoor’s “Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara”, (OUATIMD), starring Akshay Kumar as the don has opened to a terrific response on Independence Day in India. The movie collected approximately Rs 11 cr to 11.25 cr on its opening day.
Movie enthusiast, Hindi movie critic and analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#OUATIMD collected Rs 11 cr to 11.25 cr on Thursday. Since it was a limited release, the figures are very good”.
OUATIMD was released on Independence Day in just 1300 screens and got multiple shows in multiplexes. Even though the film took advantage of the Independence Day, it suffered in screen size. But, from Friday onwards the film will be screened in 2600 screens and so the real test starts only from Friday for OUATIMD.
Talking about the screen space, Taran tweeted, “Today, #OUATIMD expands to 2500+ screens in India”.
On the opening day, the film had more than 90% occupancy all over which was quite natural on a national holiday for a new film that too with a limited release. The occupancy was superb in multiplexes than that of the single screens.
On the second day (Friday), the film started on a positive note. Film had occupancy of 45% in noon shows and could have grown from evening onwards to better levels.
In the coming days, OUATIMD is expected to experience a good run as the movie would take advantage over the Bollywood film “Chennai Express” which was released on Eid. CE will enter in its second week and generally, the collections of the film would go down in the second week, giving way for new releases.
Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara is a crime thriller and is the second instalment to “Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai”. The movie has failed to impress critics, but it is riding high on Akshay’s star value. The film directed by Milan Luthria also features Sonakshi Sinha, Sonali Bendre and Imraan Khan in lead roles.

Chennai Express mints Rs. 33 crore on opening day

Selasa, 13 Agustus 2013
Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer “Chennai Express” is chugging on with immense steam at the box office. The film recorded an opening day collection of Rs.33.12 crore, say trade experts, and it is expected to do well across national and international quarters over the weekend.
Heavy promotions for the Rohit Shetty directorial, coupled with a release on an auspicious occasion like Eid-ul-Fitr Friday, seem to have paid off. Even before the release, the buzz for the movie was strong, giving it a collection of Rs. 6.75 crore in the home country from paid previews Thursday itself.
“We’ve received an overwhelming response from all quarters and the film is being loved by everyone,” Gaurav Verma, director – India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney UTV.
“Though ‘Chennai Express’ is playing in highest number of screens for any film, we still ran out of capacity in most locations due to this huge demand at the box office and the film is on its way to create new benchmarks,” added Verma.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared that the collective figures minted by the movie on Thursday and Friday in India amounted to Rs. 39.87 crore nett.
Said to have been made at a budget of Rs. 70 crore, “Chennai Express” had a grand release in over 3,500 screens in the country and 700 screens abroad.
The advance bookings for the film were strong, said Girish Wankhede of Cinemax chain.
“It’s doing very well. On Thursday, there were 80 to 90 percent occupancy of seats. Advance booking was strong for this weekend. It will do very well in coming weeks also,” Wankhede told IANS.
Down south also, the movie has received a good response.
Trade analyst Trinath shared: “This is probably the best ever opening for a SRK film in the state. Even though people voiced about the stereotyping in ‘Chennai Express’, none had any issues with it and embraced it with a smile.”
In the film, Shah Rukh plays a north Indian, who falls in love with a Tamil girl, essayed by his “Om Shanti Om” co-star Deepika.
The number of shows were doubled in Chennai for “Chennai Express” as Tamil movie “Thalaivaa” didn’t release there.
“Since ‘Thalaivaa’ didn’t release, the number of shows for ‘Chennai Express’ were doubled (on Friday). We had about 95 percent occupancy for the paid previews and most shows over the weekend are booked,” a multiplex representative in Chennai, said.
Mumbai-based trade analyst Komal Nahta didn’t find the film as entertaining as Shetty’s previous films like the “Golmaal” series, but he didn’t deny that the movie indeed got a “fantastic start” in India.
Internationally too, the film is said to be doing well.
In the Gulf region, it released Thursday and minted $435,000, with 28 screens yet to report. But it is estimated to cross $550,000 by the time all screens report, said a source.
In Singapore, two screens are yet to report, but it made $95,359 on Thursday.
“Chennai Express”, an action comedy, had only night show previews in Britain Thursday, numbers are 142,220 pounds with three sites yet to report.
In Australia, the paid previews Thursday amounted to $34,314, while in New Zealand, the figures came to $6,431.
Adarsh shared on Twitter that the movie took a “huge start in US-Canada”, earning $2,60,000 (Rs.15, 776,020.00 approximately) out of Thursday night preview shows.
Officials at UTV Motion Pictures, which has co-produced the potboiler with Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment, are happy.
“‘Chennai’ Express has taken the box office by storm in international markets. The movie is setting new opening day and paid previews records and benchmarks for Hindi movies in most countries,” Amrita Pandey, executive director, International Distribution, Syndication and Disney Media Distribution, Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.
“In many cinema chains we’ve added shows and the movie was moved to additional screens and to highest capacity screens. This has been a massive opening to a huge release,” she added.
