Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar's noble bound

Jihaal-e-mashkuun, mopan-pe-ranjish, bahaar-e-hijr bechaaraa dil hai

Sunaai deti hai jiski dhadkan, tumhara dil ya hamara dil hai...'
This lyric in chaste Urdu, from J.P. Dutta's hit movie GHULAMI, has been sung by Lata Didi so fluently that it would be difficult to believe that she comes from an orthodox Maharashtrian background.

However, when Lata Didi made her debut in playback singing in early 40's, she found the Urdu language difficult to pronounce. A veteran composer had cited the example of a song from the film ARZOO, viz. 'Aayi bahaar jiya doley, mora jiya doley...' In its second antara, 'Saawaan aaya ri, sakhi dhuum machaata sakhii dhuum machaata, rimjhim rimjhim...' Here, one can notice Lata's Maharashtrian accent in the pronunciation of the word rimjhim, which is pronounced as rimjh-eee-m.

Thus readers would be stunned that if she found hard to pronounce a simple word as rimjhim, than how on earth did she manage to sing the above mentioned GHULAMI song which is not just in chaste Urdu but has Persian words too!

Well, here is an interesting anecdote which Lata Didi has umpteen times spoken in her interviews but the younger generation may not be aware.

Once Lata Didi, was travelling in a local train accompanied by music director Anil Biswas. At Bandra, actor Dilip Kumar got into the same compartment. Since Dilip Kumar knew Biswas, he greeted him. Anil da introduced Lata to him as 'a new singer having a very good voice and holding a great future.'

Dilip Kumar, who was in a jovial mood, took a closer look at the shy Lata, and asked, 'You're a Maharashtrian, aren't you? Take care not to allow your dal-bhaat accent to seep into our Urdu!' The actor was joking, but Lata was deeply offended. She vowed that very moment that she would learn Urdu, and hired a Maulvi to teach her the finer nuances of Urdu language.

Under the maulvi called Mehboob bhai, Lata Mangeshkar did rigorous training and mastered the language and stunned Dilip Kumar with her Ghazal in his very own movie ANDAZ. The Ghazal was Uthaye ja unke sitam aur jiye jaa... Yunhi muskuraye ja, aansoo piye ja.... Listening the Ghazal Dilip Kumar was dumbfounded and praised Lata Didi for her tremendous command over Urdu. Lata Didi in return complimented Dilip Kumar as to how his nasty joke had helped her master the otherwise difficult Urdu language.

Since then the two became great pals and Lata Didi began tying Rakhi to him on every 'Raksha Bandhan'! Lata Didi says, ''Dilip Kumar is like my family member and attends each of our family gatherings.''
